At risk or responsive: Rethinking unemployment policy

Public services increasingly use predictive algorithms to direct scarce support towards those most at risk. But are these also the people who benefit most from intervention? This column explains how to navigate this trade-off and shows why it matters in practice. Job search counselling gets people into work faster, but has little effect on those at greatest risk of long-term unemployment. Combining predictions of risk and responsiveness can make scarce support substantially more effective, while highlighting the need for different support for those hardest to help.

Dystopian and dehumanising: that’s what it felt like when I was interviewed by an AI assistant

Outsourcing the essential task of interviewing job applicants to a machine seems lazy at best, negligent at worst. I want better for all of us Over the past 15 years of my working life, I’ve done a lot of interviews for a lot of different jobs and industries: call centre operator, social media manager, bookseller, copywriter, library worker. Recently, after completing my first year of a masters degree in early childhood and primary teaching, I applied for a preschool education role and experienced a first: being interviewed by AI. I’d heard of this practice and was aware of its shortcomings, from how demoralising it is to the risk of discrimination.

The adjustment of the Danish labour market to AI has begun

Policymakers are asking whether generative AI is reshaping labour demand, and the literature has found mixed results so far. This column links Denmark’s official IT-use survey to monthly employer–employee records and compares firms that started using AI in 2023 with those that did not. Early adopters fall behind their own pre-adoption employment trend. The decline is most visible in AI-exposed jobs and among new hires, and only significant among small firms. The results indicate that AI is affecting the labour market, even though the effect is not visible in the aggregate statistics.

Rightwing ‘great replacement’ fears mask tech's real great replacement | Jason Stanley

While adherents to the racist theory condemn a shadowy global elite, Silicon Valley is working toward the replacement of humans with AI Across the world, “great replacement” theory has been employed again and again as the political foundation for fascism. Some of its fundamental tenets, such as the view that “whites are a dying minority”, have been amplified by tech billionaires and their platforms. According to the version of this theory most employed in Europe and the United States, white replacement theory, white populations are being “replaced” by non-white populations, a replacement engineered by a shadowy global elite. For example, the need for skilled labor is supposedly being used by global elites as an excuse to bring in non-white immigrants to replace white workers. An AfD-led state government will develop a strategy for Saxony-Anhalt focused on technological upgrading, digital
